Visual Analysis of “Gotta Catch ‘Em All”

“Gotta Catch ‘Em All” is a print made by Michael Menchaca. This was the first piece I saw when I entered the gallery. I was drawn to it from the vibrant colors, and because I’m a Pokemon GO fan. The print depicts symbols from the game, police officers, and four men with bird-like faces. A majority of the piece contains red, white and blue to symbolize our nation, and stripes that reminded me of our flag. This piece creates an interesting atmosphere with symbols from the game and the colors that make it pop, but is also quite disturbing with the police firing at the four characters in the middle.

Pokemon GO was almost like a distraction from everything that was happening around us. There were many occurrences of police brutality in the last year, but many seemed to be preoccupied with other things rather than addressing the problem. The artist definitely got his point across with this print, about a national problem that should be talked about more, and a game that has captured the attention of thousands that seemed to take away from more important events.
